Keep Your Pets Safe Indoors During Freezing Weather

When the weather turns freezing, it is our responsibility as pet owners to keep our pets safe and warm. In Texas, where ice storms can bring temperatures as low as 15 degrees Fahrenheit, this is especially important. If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for your pets. As caretakers of God’s creation, we must do our part to ensure the comfort and well-being of our furry friends.

Why Pets Need to Stay Indoors

Pets are not equipped to handle freezing temperatures for extended periods. While some animals may have thick fur, they are still susceptible to frostbite, hypothermia, and other cold-related illnesses. Just like humans, they need protection from harsh weather. Proverbs 12:10 says, “The righteous care for the needs of their animals.” This verse reminds us that being righteous means being compassionate and responsible for the well-being of our pets.

Sweaters and Short Outdoor Time

If you have to let your pets outside, make it brief—no longer than 3 minutes for bathroom breaks. During this time, ensure they are wearing sweaters or coats to protect them from the cold. Whether your pets like it or not, sweaters can make a huge difference in keeping them warm. I’ve put sweaters on my rescued pets, and although they may not love it, it’s a non-negotiable during freezing weather. Their safety comes first.

When you bring your pets back indoors, dry them off if they’ve gotten wet from snow or ice. Wet fur can quickly lower their body temperature. Also, check their paws for ice, salt, or chemicals from de-icing products, as these can irritate their skin or be harmful if ingested.

Create a Warm Indoor Space

Make sure your home is warm and cozy for your pets. Set up a comfortable space with blankets, a soft bed, and access to water and food. Avoid placing their bed near drafts or cold floors. If possible, use a space heater or heating pad designed for pets, but always supervise to prevent any accidents.

For outdoor pets, it’s critical to bring them inside during freezing weather. Leaving them outside is not only dangerous but also inhumane. Deuteronomy 22:6-7 teaches us to be mindful of God’s creatures, even in small acts: “If you come across a bird’s nest…do not take the mother with the young. You may take the young, but be sure to let the mother go, so that it may go well with you.” This shows that God values the welfare of all His creations.

Avoid Common Winter Dangers

Freezing weather brings additional risks to pets, such as:

Antifreeze Poisoning: Antifreeze has a sweet taste that can attract pets, but it is highly toxic. Keep all antifreeze products securely stored and clean up any spills immediately.

Hypothermia and Frostbite: Pets exposed to freezing temperatures for too long can suffer from hypothermia or frostbite. Signs include shivering, lethargy, and pale or discolored skin. If you notice these symptoms, bring your pet indoors and contact your veterinarian.

Frozen Water: Ensure your pets have access to fresh, unfrozen water at all times. Check their water bowls frequently to prevent them from freezing over.

Chemicals on Paws: Salt and de-icing chemicals can burn your pet’s paws. Wipe their paws with a damp cloth after each trip outside to remove any residue.

Be Responsible and Accountable

As pet owners, we are stewards of God’s creatures. Genesis 1:28 says, “God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.’” This passage reminds us that God has entrusted us with the care of animals, and we must act responsibly.

If you see a neighbor’s pet left outside in freezing weather, consider speaking with them or reporting it to local animal control. Every pet deserves a chance to stay safe and warm.

Love and Compassion for Your Pets

Our pets are more than just animals; they are part of our families. They bring us joy, companionship, and unconditional love. It’s our duty to care for them in return. Proverbs 27:23 says, “Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds.” While this verse refers to livestock, the principle applies to all animals under our care. We must pay attention to their needs and ensure they are safe and comfortable.

Practical Tips for Freezing Weather

Limit Outdoor Time: Only allow your pets outside for very short periods. Keep an eye on them and bring them inside immediately after they’ve done their business.

Dress Them Warmly: Use sweaters, coats, and booties to protect your pets from the cold.

Provide Warm Shelter: Ensure your home is warm and draft-free. Create a cozy spot with blankets and a bed.

Check Paws Regularly: Clean their paws after each outdoor trip to remove ice, salt, and chemicals.

Watch for Signs of Cold Stress: Look out for shivering, whining, or other signs that your pet is too cold.

Keep Them Hydrated: Make sure your pets have access to fresh, unfrozen water.

Remember, Pets Are God’s Creation

Your pets rely on you for everything, especially during harsh weather. When you care for them, you reflect God’s love and compassion. Matthew 10:29-31 reminds us of God’s care for all His creation: “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” If God cares so deeply for the sparrows, how much more should we care for the pets He has placed in our lives?

Final Thoughts

Freezing weather can be dangerous for pets, but with a little effort, we can keep them safe and warm. Be proactive, compassionate, and mindful of their needs. By doing so, you fulfill your role as a steward of God’s creation. Let’s remember to treat our pets with the love and care they deserve, especially during extreme weather. They are a gift from God, and it’s our privilege to care for them.
